No Country for Old Men is an excellent film.

My recommendations are:

Gran Tourino
Lake View terrace
Shaun of the Dead
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Apocalypto
Stephen Kings "It"

I recommend:

Dances with Wolves (long and epic...but just an excellent movie all around)
All three The Lord of the Rings EXTENDED versions (they added so much content that if you're a fan, you MUST see them)
Kingdom of Heaven (totally underrated)
The 13th Warrior (just an all-around interesting movie)
Interview with a Vampire (it spans over 100 years, which makes it cool)
The Lost Boys (a fun somewhat cheesy 80's vampire flick that's actually good)
Return of the Living Dead (another cheesy 80's flick that makes fun of zombie movies and is actually somewhat creepy to boot-highly entertaining)
First Blood (the original Rambo movie...actually it was quite good and not nearly as cheesy as most of its sequels)
On Golden Pond (definitely one for the older crowd and mature people)
An American Werewolf in London (superior to An American Werewolf in Paris, which stank)
Revenge of the Nerds (the first one is classic)
The Running Man (a senseless action flick that's actually worth watching and is very entertaining)

I like most of these, but one was not mentioned that i hear quoted daily.

I recommend:

Forrest Gump (everyone likes that movie, you cant hate it, its not possible)
Saving Private Ryan (one of the greatest war movies)
Public Enemies (Depp is amazing in this)
All 3 LOTR movies (still my favorite series of movies, f*ck Harry Potter)
The Godfather (original beats all but still should watch all of them)
Scarface (because you have to watch the movie that has the quote "Say hello to my little friend.")
The Shawshank Redemption (Freeman is an amazing actor)
Pulp Fiction (violent and awesomness)
Silence of the Lambs (Hopkins is another amazing actor, the rest of the series is just ok though)
Psycho (one of the best horror films ever)
The Matrix series (first is the best, plus if you havent seen at least one of the movies you either a dumbass or have terrible taste in movies)
To Kill a Mockingbird (a classic and a good watch)
Terminator series (only with Arnold though, Bale blows and you cant beat Schwarzenegger)
Predator (best alien movie, but only the first one, again cant beat Schwarzenegger)
Alien (second best alien movie)
The Shining (best of the King movies)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (one of my favorite comedy movies)
Full Metal Jacket (has some of the best quotes you can ever find)
Braveheart (Gibson as William Wallace is awesomeness in itself
The Patriot (another good war movie with Gibson)
Jaws (because its the reason sharks are so feared today)
Gran Turino (one of Eastwood's best movies imo)
Dirty Harry (is the best Eastwood movie)
The Wizard of Oz (because it was the first color movie released)
The Bourne Identity and the series (all were good except for the last one)
Best animated movies have either gotta be Finding Nemo or Wall-E

If you havent seen at least 75% of those movies, then you do not know what good movies are, cuz all of these movies f*ckin rock!!!  :D ;D :D

Actually, you just included a bunch that I was going to put in for 'round 2'.  :)  Others you included are so main-stream that I decided not to mention them, but you've compiled a good list.

A few more I loved were:

Gladiator (who hasn't seen it?)
Fight Club (if you saw it and didn't understand it, watch it again and maybe again after that)
The Sixth Sense (again, another one most have seen but is an awesome movie)
Platoon (possibly my favorite war movie ever)
Troy (why people didn't like this movie, I don't know)
Stick (I haven't ever been able to find this on DVD)
Pirates (the one with Walter Matthau...I had to import the DVD of this)
Kill Bill (both of them are great)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (go into it with the knowledge that the over-the-top moves are intentional and truly classic in nature)
The Last Samurai (Tom Cruise did a good job here, whether you like him or not)

I could go on and on, and I might.  :)

Title: Re: Movies You Recommend
Post by: SoleO Snip3r V2 on July 20, 2009, 12:45:35 AM
^ I knew i was missing some good ones, but i couldnt think of any others.

Gladiator is awesome
Troy is like the only mainstream movie with 'known' actors revolving around Greek mythology.
Sixth Sense was kinda gay to me, but still a good watch.
Fight Club is another good one
Last Samurai is another good one.

I didnt put Kill Bill in there because Americans trying to make a martial-arts movie always sucks big ass monkey balls. Terrible choreography, blood spatter was really inaccurate, and storyline was one of the dumbest i have ever seen.

I forgot to put the martial arts movies.

-Any Bruce Lee movie is a very very good watch
-Also, any Jet-Li movies are a good watch
-House of Flying Daggers (unrealistic, but still a good Asian martial-arts movie)

-Gone in 60 Seconds
-Tropic Thunder (two reasons, one you will never look at Tom Cruise the same, and two, it has some good ass quotes and Downing Jr. is funny as hell playing a black person)
-A Time to Kill

I could also go on and on, and more than likely also will ;)

I liked Kill Bill because it has that Tarantino twistedness that only he possesses.

A few others I recommend are:

Romancing the Stone (it's very entertaining, despite being an adventurous romantic comedy thingy)
Excalibur (by far the best King Arthur movie in my opinion)
The Patriot (the Mel Gibson one, even if it is strikingly like Braveheart or We Were Soldiers)
House on Haunted Hill (one of the most fun horror movies to watch, period)
Unforgiven  (it was Clint Eastwood's final western and carries a lot of symbolism)
Indiana Jones (the original trilogy are all top-notch films...while the latest one is certainly worth watching if you're a fan, but not as great)
X-Men (again, all 3 are good if you're not a purist and freak out over the 3rd one especially)
Lethal Weapon (there are 4 of these, and all are great)
Shaolin Soccer (hilarious...and I recommend watching both the English dubbed one and the subtitled one as both have unique content)
Christine (one of the better Stephen King movie translations for sure)

I'll stop at these...for now.  :)

Title: Re: Movies You Recommend
Post by: SoleO Snip3r V2 on July 20, 2009, 01:44:54 AM
^ Dont get me wrong, I love me some Tarantino movies, but i think that out of all of his, the Kill Bill series is the worst. It does have the twistedness, like the whole poking out that chicks eyes and then stepping on it with her bare foot, but actor/actrees choice was also bad. Uma Thurman is neither attractive nor good at acting lol she should have stayed a model imo.

Grindhouse is a good Tarantino stint. Kill Bill not so much  ;)

X-men is good.
Indiana Jones is another one i missed.
Shaolin Soccer is really funny, English dubbed one is the best lol

Ill stop now as well and let other people post some movies that they enjoy.

Yes, I don know what Reservoir Dogs is.  I own the DVD.  :)  It's a good movie, but not my fave.  I think when it comes to Tarantino, people have their hits and misses with him.  I think my favorite movie he gets credit for is Pulp Fiction...by far.  It was already mentioned, so I didn't put it on any of my lists.  I wasn't a big fan of From Dusk til Dawn though, but I know a lot of people that like that one.  I guess he has a little something for everyone and a little something that everyone might not like as well.  :)  To recommend a Tarantino movie at all is and always will be hit and miss with various people.

I can agree with that. His movies are either a big hit, or leave with this sort of WTF feeling and you dont prefer to see that movie a second time. I like Tarantino's style, his violence/twistedness in movies is unmatched.

Pulp Fiction is the best one, no matter what anyone else says.
Natural Born Killers is good.
Kill Bill was good to most people (not me)
From Dusk til Dawn was an iffy one (i didnt really enjoy it that much)
Reservoir Dogs was a good one (i liked it)
True Romance was another good one (also liked it)
Little Nicky was eh (not one of Sandler's better movies, but was still somewhat entertaining)

His other ones are much less mainstream and most people havent seen them. The only other ones that i know of, and have seen, are:
-Four Rooms
-Jackie Brown
-Desperado
-Iron Monkey
-Sin City: The Hard Goodbye
-Killing Zoe
-Detroit 9000

Those are the only other ones that i know of (besides recent ones like Grindhouse and what not) that Tarantino either directed, or was involved in  :)

Title: Re: Movies You Recommend

Natural Born Killers was a good watch but I wouldn't really want to see it again. It was very strange and the fight in the prison at the end made me kinda edgy what with all the cops being in ovens etc.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

In 1845 Canada, young James Howlett sees his father killed by groundskeeper Thomas Logan. The trauma activates the boy's mutation: bone claws protrude from James' hands, and he kills his father's murderer. With his dying breath, Thomas Logan reveals that he, not John Howlett, is James' real father. James flees with Victor Creed, the abused son of their father who is thus James' brother. They spend the next century as soldiers, fighting in the American Civil War, both World Wars and the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, Victor attempts to rape a local village woman, but is stopped after killing a senior officer. Despite his objections to Victor's actions, James defends his brother, and the two are sentenced to execution by firing squad, which they survive. Major William Stryker approaches them, now in military custody, and offers them membership in Team X, a group of mutants including marksman Agent Zero, swordsman Wade Wilson, teleporter John Wraith, invincible Fred Dukes and electropathic Chris Bradley. They join the team, but the group's questionable actions and disregard for human life cause James to leave.
Six years later, James, now going by the name Logan, lives in Canada with his girlfriend, Kayla Silverfox. Colonel Stryker locates Logan and warns him that someone is killing members of the team; both Wilson and Bradley are dead. Shortly afterward, Victor murders Kayla and attacks Logan. Stryker offers Logan a way to beat Victor; Logan undergoes an operation to reinforce his skeleton with adamantium, a virtually indestructible metal. Before the procedure, Logan asks for new dog tags inscribed with "Wolverine", based on a story that Kayla told him. Once the procedure is complete, Stryker orders Logan's memory erased, but Logan overhears and fights his way out. Logan hides at a farm, but the next day Zero tracks him down. Zero attacks Logan, killing the owners of the farm, but later he defeats Zero and continues his revenge.
Logan locates Wraith and Dukes and asks them about the location of Stryker's new laboratory, referred to as "The Island". They tell him to find Remy LeBeau, who escaped and knows the location of The Island. Logan locates Gambit in New Orleans, and asks for the Island's location, but Gambit suspects Logan was sent to recapture him and attacks. Creed manages to find Logan, and after killing Wraith, he attacks him. When Logan is about to kill Victor, Gambit interrupts, giving Victor the chance to escape. Logan and Gambit fight one last time before Logan convinces him he is not working for Stryker. Gambit takes him to Stryker's facility on Three Mile Island. Logan learns that Kayla is alive and conspired with Stryker in exchange for her sister's safety.
Logan leaves, enraging Victor. When Victor demands the adamantium bonding promised for his service, Stryker refuses on the basis that Victor would not survive the procedure. Victor attempts to kill Kayla when she tries to persuade him Stryker betrayed them both, but Logan hears her screams and returns. Logan defeats and nearly kills Victor, but stops when Kayla reminds him of his humanity. Kayla and Logan free the imprisoned mutants.
Stryker activates Weapon XI, originally Wade Wilson, but now a "mutant killer" with the abilities of other mutants, which Stryker refers to as "The Deadpool". Logan holds Weapon XI off while the mutants flee. The party is greeted by Professor Charles Xavier, who offers them shelter at his school.
Kayla, mortally wounded, decides to stay. Logan lures Weapon XI to the top of one of the plant's cooling towers. Logan is almost killed until Victor intervenes. Logan decapitates Weapon XI and kicks him into the base of the cooling tower. Victor departs and Logan is saved from the collapsing tower by Gambit. As Logan carries Kayla to safety, Stryker shoots him in the forehead with adamantium bullets, rendering him unconscious. Kayla uses her persuasion powers to make Stryker drop the gun and commands him to walk away before dying from her wounds. Gambit returns as Logan regains consciousness, but the bullets that were shot at his brain have triggered amnesia. Gambit tries convincing Logan to come with him, but he declines, wanting to go his own way.
In a post-credits scene, it is revealed that Weapon XI is still alive in the rubble of the cooling tower. In an alternate post-credits scene, Logan is revealed to have traveled to Japan.

Sherlock Holmes was surprisingly good, and .... you know the actor guy in it (whoever he is) is pretty good in most movies he's in.
Anything with Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Leonardo DeCaprio (especially the Aviator), Johnny Depp (especially Secret Window) or most of the stuff with Nicholas Cage is a pretty decent movie.

Still if I were to recommend a specific gem overlooked by most?

City of Violence and Moon Child --- both are just fantastic movies (not in English)

The carecters are great and really fun to watch and it has one of the most bad ass people ever in it. (You will know who i mean)

If you havent seen it i will make you. (Plus its out on TV now so its free :P)

If you guys r planning on going to the movies in the fuure. I would recommend "The Town" for sure. That movie is f*cking brilliant. Dialog is so damn good. Story is very simple too as well. The story is about these 4 friends that rob banks. While there robbing the bank......one of the people was taking hostage. Now they have to keep a eye on her so that she wont snitch them. The action is really really well made. Actors and actress is spot on there acting. So please people check it out and tell me wat u think.

I would recommend Inception. It just came out on DVD and Blueray this week but it's so worth spending what should be your Christmas money on yourself. Inception keeps you thinking through the entire movie, and just when you think you've figured it out something else pops up that makes you go OMFGWTFBBQ! But it isn't like some movies where there's a plot twist at every corner.

I've never seen a movie like it, and you can rewatch it over and over again and still miss things. :)

The Truman Show.  I don't care what anyone else says, Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar for that movie.  Also, Shawshank Redemption, another movie overlooked by the Academy.

Then you haven't seen many crazy movies, because those both suck. Pretentious overrated crap.

I recommend any John Waters' film. Seriously, these are must watch films. I particular enjoy Pink Flamingos the most, but they all each have their merits.

If you like a medieval comedy setting, I recommend The Princess Bride, starring the Bard's Tale's very own Carey Elwes, Columbo's Peter Falk and The Wonder Years' Fred Savage and rounding out the cast, Andre The Giant.
