A good horror movie? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!
Oh sorry, your being serious.  The only one that comes readily to mind is anything in the evil dead series, the only good "horror" movie that I've seen.  But even then, it's got a heavy emphasis on comedy.

It depends on your definition of good.  Some movies are good in the traditional sense of the word, while others are horrible but enjoyable to watch.  The Exorcist was nominated for a few Academy Awards, as was Jaws, although the latter may be more of a thriller, but often considered a horror, so I would say these fall into the category of a good movie.  Then you have slasher films, like the Freddy Krueger and Jason movies, which aren't that great but very enjoyable and memorable.

In my opinion, the only good horror movies are the classics.  The original Amityville Horror, Dracula, Frankenstein.  All that good stuff.  A Clockwork Orange was pretty good too.

It depends what kind of horror movie, the classics like Nosferatu will always live in but if you mean newer horror movies then you're kinda out of luck for the most part. However there are some good newer ones.

Drag me to Hell: A really great movie that is fun to watch as much as it is hard to watch. It's directed by Sam Rami (The guy that directed Evil Dead) so it's going to be lots of fun as well as really really creepy, it's also cheesy but in the good way.

The Loved Ones: An Australian movie released in the last couple of year, practically nobody I know has seen it. It's one of the best gorehound movies I've ever seen, it's much better than SAW (Although SAW 2 was great) and is very entertaining.

The Devil's Rejects: One of the all time best in my opinion and by far the best of the 21st century, you really have to see it to understand how great this movie is. It's directed by Rob Zombie and after the shit stain of House of A Thousand Corpses (Which this is a sequel to) it really caught me off guard. If you were gonna watch one horror movie from the 21st century then it should be this.

There are also the classic ones such as Evil Dead, The Excorcist, Halloween, Dracula, Nosferatu (One of my favourites).

The John Carpenter Versions of Halloween I & II.  Basically they were one movie and ended the series...before all the crap stared with the upteen sequels.

The Thing is also very good.

Recently (like a month and a half ago) saw Insidious and it scared the sh*t out of me. Lot's of jump scares but are well done. Very chilling atmosphere with a great musical score. The trailer makes it look pretty bad especially with Darth Maul making an appearance but that part is one of the most terrifying in the whole film so give it a go although not watching it in the cinema may dampen the scariness of it.

I very rarely deliberately watch horror movies (as anyone who has watched my blind Bioshock walkthrough can tell you, i have a very low tolerance for creepy stuff. =P ) but my friends once coerced me to watch, on two different Halloweens, The Shining and The Descent, both of which were very intense, in different ways, and very well made. I also saw the beginning of A Clockwork Orange at the same time I saw The Shining (didn't get to finish; my roommate found it "uncomfortable" and suggested The Shining instead -- which made *me* uncomfortable >.< ) -- would like to finish it at some point, as it looked quite good.

I guess it all depends on your taste. I enjoyed John Carpenter's The Thing like Saxcat mentioned. In the Mouth of Madness is pretty good as well, it's a combination of psychological and monster.

There's TONS of great suggestions here. The Shining is a masterpiece.

If I may add one, there's a Spanish film called "REC" that is one of my all-time favorite horror/thriller movies. If you remember "Quarantine," then yeah...that's a remake of REC.

Don't be biased by its "shaky camera" style, however. It did a lot of original things with homemade, first-person cinematography which is now basically a movement in modern cinema (I'm aware The Blair Witch Project was the very first, if that's what you're about to yell at me for).

I'd say if you've got some time on your hands, then definitely check it out. I guarantee you'll have some great scares  ;)

Peace,
Carbon

The old scream movies were good, bad acting yes but they were good. The new Scream 4 was the best one but I dont believe its out yet.

Let the Right One In is phenomenal. The absolute best cinematography I've ever seen in a movie. But make sure you watch the original, and not the new American remake.

not that big into the horror thing, but if you want horror comedy's I would defiantly try either the attack of the killer tomatoes series, killer klowns from outer space, and one of my favorite indie movies thanks killing.

not sure these are what your looking for.

Pretty much the original of any remake is a good horror movie. Like people have already mentioned, [REC], Ju-On, NoES, Halloween, Let me in etc. All of those are good to great. I'm sort of torn on including Night of the Living Dead(again the original) or any zombie movie because I don't really see them as strictly horror. The remake of Dawn of the Dead was good too.

there's one i just watched called The Hitcher, the original from '87 i believe.  though it's not horror per say, it has a great, creepy vibe throughout the film, and one of those that has sense of almost hopelessness for the main character, which i found to be a great watch.  it's more of a psychological thriller, if you're into it.

but there's a ton of great suggestions through the topic already, so be sure to make a crap ton of popcorn XD.

Indisious would have to one of the better new horror films made. but you can always look to the classics, freddy, jason, evil dead, halloween, the thing, poltergeist and any romero zombie movie.

I was just coming here to post about Insidious.  Not a bad movie.  Not a particularly good movie, kinda fizzled at the end, but not bad.  And I did find it fairly scary.

Ok, I just finished watching Secuestrados and it was the most powerful horror movie I've seen in years. Brilliant acting (one of the finest I've ever seen actually), amazing camerawork, several minutes long cutless shots, solid effects, good script, great direction...can't recommend this one enough.

A Good Horror Movie.  Hrmm.  I've seen a lot of horror films.  And none of them scary, to me, that is.  Which means they all general fail as horror films.  Horror films must be scary!  Or you can go the route of the people who cry for the originals.  Sure they were great...  for their time.  But with the current time, it's like using a candle in favour of a light bulb.  So films like the "Exorcist"; are not that scary anymore, with those outdated effects.

Though films these days aren't all that scary, I can definitely say many of them are disturbing.  Like "The Human Centipede".  And I recently watched the original "Grudge", "Ju-On".  And it was dreadfully boring.  Not scary.  Though in some instances, quite disturbing.

Horror genre is very dead these days.  They are always trying, but it might just me.  They can't scare me.  If you know something to scare my socks off, let me know.  But these days, it's all cliche'd, surprise tactics.  I am heavily disappointed.

In my eyes.  If it's not Scary, then it's not horror.  It can be a great film, can be timeless.  But if it's not Scary, it's not horror.

^ Horror doesn't have to be scary. There are too many subgenres and you probably just keep stumbling upon the wrong ones.  :P

Very true.  Horror films strive not only to scare but also to disturb or shock the watcher.  I think they should leave you with an unsettling feeling, and if it does, then it's a horror.

I was considering that the entire time I was writing my answer.  But the one thought that always came back, was that scary is fun.  Disturbing, not so much.  So there's an enjoyment factor involved for me.  And it is after all, the Entertainment Industry.  Something scary is more entertaining.

Oh well, I'm obsessed with the horror genre since I was, like, 3 or 4 years old (awesome parentship ;)), so you can say that by now I also don't find vast majority of horror flicks scary. All I look for, just as in all other genres, is general quality. To say horror has to be scary is almost the same as saying horror needs jump scares. But what do I know, we all indeed find what's entertaining and what ain't subjectively, so in the end horror as a genre possibly simply isn't for you. I would still encourage you to watch some of these movies: Secuestrados (more disturbing than scary, but if you can appreciate top-notch acting, heavy atmosphere and whatnot, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy this movie), The Thing, Sublime (this is massively underrated pretty much everywhere I look, I reckon people just don't get it), The House of the Devil, Dead Ringers, A Tale of Two Sisters, Interview With the Vampire, Dracula (1992, along with the Interview the thickiest atmosphere in a movie ever), Fragile, Los Ojos de Julia, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Ils, À l'intérieur. Also, there's this Czech short movie that could well determine your relationship to horror as a genre:
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6msoO4j51k

I'd be well intersted what your thoughts would be while and after watching it (not that I'm forcing you or anything >_>).

Now it just comes down to opinion, because I find the disturbing far more entertaining than the frightening.  I scare easily, and scary images stay with me for a really long time, so I don't really get a kick out of them.  The disturbing, however, doesn't affect me nearly as much on a long term basis, so I greatly prefer that.  Also, I may just be the slightest bit sick in the head, so disturbing situations appeal to me.

My favorite horror movie ever is Rosemary's Baby. Very creepy. Some others are Mothman Prophecies, Psycho (sometimes considered a thriller), Insidious (surprisngly good), Trick 'r Treat, REC, and The Exorcist. I like actual horror for the most part, not just cheap scares.

The Evil Dead series is probably the best comedy/horror.
