Title: Cartoon Network...What Happend?
Post by: ExceedEdge on February 10, 2011, 07:10:58 AM
Basically what the topic says What Happend?

I'm pretty sure as you were growing up you've flipped through channels and seen Cartoon Network even today they still do but seriously what led to the downfall. The Channel used to be something i'd watched everyday after school cause Toonami had like the best line up of shows and the original cartoons they use to show (Examples: Cow and Chicken, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, I Am Weasel, Dexter's Lab, Ed,Edd,and Eddy,Samurai Jack,Etc...) were not bad shows. Today I watch Cartoon Network and its like not really Cartoon Network with random shows that show Real stuff like "Dude what would, Happen?, Destroy Build Destroy, and Hole in the Wall" I feel watching the channel is a waste of time and the sad fact that all the shows they use to show are all gone. Not really gone but oh randomly they'll show something old like Courage the Cowardly Dog, but I feel like whatever happened something hit the fan hard. I don't really watch tv these days except Nicktoons for Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Dragonball Z Kai, or Discovery Channel for Mythbuster's,Dirty Jobs, and anything else on that channel. Cartoon Network still has some shows i watch like Symbiotic Titan and Young Justice but that's all I watch on it these days and they're only on for one day of the week for a new episode. I think it's kinda sad though that the channel just isn't as interesting as it used to be trying to appeal to the new age of kids and teens but well I think its lame they have to go that road since broadcasting Real live action show's doesn't really make sense on a channel called "Cartoon Network". I know Nickelodeon does that but they've done if for years trying to do better than them is like a waste of time since they appeal to they're audience, but hey it television always changing for better or for worse, in the case of Cartoon Network focus on cartoon's more instead of putting in random show's like MAD or whatever Real Live Shows they're airing it's worse but someday maybe they'll go back or think of some better cartoons to appeal to people.

That's the gist of what I think is going on and how i kinda feel about it.

I'd like to know what do you think happend and how it's affected you? (if in any way) you know discuss how this once Decent Channel growing up has Declined to what it is today.

All of the good people involved with Cartoon Network either died or moved on to something else.  At the same time, children got dumber and could not comprehend the jokes in the older cartoons, which were actually quite clever sometimes.  Then the people of Cartoon Network really stuck their heads up their asses and forgot to show cartoons, replacing them with live-action bullshit.

It's sad to see the greatest television channel of my childhood so utterly ruined, but they almost completely made up for that with Adult Swim, which is possible the greatest television programming block (I don't know what to call it since it's not actually a channel) of my adulthood.

I guess basically what I am trying to say is that the decline of Cartoon Network is sad, but it doesn't affect me a whole lot because they provided some form of restitution and by now I probably would have stopped watching those kinds of cartoons anyway.  Although, I would kill for an episode of Looney Toons every once in a while.

I used to love Cartoon Network.  Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Transformers...etc.  My baby was Toonami with all the good anime and adult shows.  Why did they take down Toonami.  Everyone I know loved that block.  All I have to look forward too now is Adult Swim on Saturday.  Ohh how the mighty have fallen.

My friend streamed weekly Toonami for us a little while ago. Our line-up was DBZ x2, Zoids, Pokemon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Zatch Bell, Ruroni Kenshin, and Justice League Unlimited. I think that was it. We had a great time.

Cartoon network is about to pull a death move and crap itself to death.  Quit watching it around four years ago.  Although it survived with me much longer than nick....about twelve years ago I gave up on them.

I heard Nick was bringing back CatDog this year. If they were smart, they'd trash their current shows and just air re-runs of Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and other shows like that.

Oh god, how I miss the old School Cartoon Network, Every weekday after noon I would watch Toonami, right from the begining back in 1997 when their original Lineup was Thundercats, some action-ey Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 60s and 70s Voltron and The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest. At night I would watch the classic Looney Tunes Cartoons along with The Flintstones and what not. Even as I got older and Cartoon Network changed their line up and showed more original cartoons such as Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and Courage The Cowardly Dog, I continued to watch and enjoy. Toonami also kept my interest when they started Showing DBZ, Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon and even Ronin Warriors. But alas, as time drug on these shows were eventually pulled off the air and now we're left with the Live Action crap that no one I know of watches, fad shows like Bakugan and their Ilk. During this time the only thing keeping me watching Cartoon Network was Adult Swim and even now it's mostly reruns of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocolypse that I would watch.

I miss the old school mid 90s cartoon network where the jokes are hilarious and the ideas are original without having to shove reality shows up the ass like Disney. To be fair today there are a fair amount of good cartoons and animations on cartoon network that is humorous with adult swim helping improve on comedy entertainment, so its matter of opinion on this one.

I started watching the channel around 2000, 'cause that was when my folks finally got satellite TV.Watching reruns of some shows along with Cartoon Cartoons and Toonami. It is sad that the channel isn't the same as it once was. I tried giving it another chance when watching Chowder, Flapjack, Regular Show, Adventure Time and MAD. But I mostly watch Boomerang, soccer games or not watch TV at all.

Only good thing about Cartoon Network is Adult Swim. But putting live-action movies and shows, they just want to be like Nickelodeon.

Title: Re: Cartoon Network...What Happend?

As far as the whole "Reality" craze is concerned the original culprit is that crappy Survivor show that aired on CBS 12 years ago. If it had been a total ratings flop, none of the other reality shows would have ever come to fruition. But wait, the TRUE source of all this would be MTV's The Real World which aired in the early 90s. This should have been a sign of things to come considering how many clones of it are out there now, such as the horrendous Jersey Shore, 16 and Pregnent, etc. Of course Nickelodeon followed suit by airing more sitcom like shows such as Clarissa Explains it all, Welcome Freshmen and Salute Your Shorts, the latter of the two I actually liked. But of course by the early 2000s Disney started showing crappy reality shows and teeny bopper music videos so of course to compete, NIck followed suit. Though it took much longer and there aren't any bubble gum teeny bopper pop videos being shown, it was only a matter of time before Cartoon Network became infected as well. Honestly, the death nail in Cartoon Network's coffin came when that horrible Total Drama Island aka a hideous Cartoon Clone of Survivor, came out. As long as the Execs think this is what the Kids like and there are a metric butt load of kids who DO watch this trype, then this is what the Network execs are going to crank out. Good thing there's DVDs of the good stuff out there and of course, the internet.

And TOM's Toonami farewell speech was Cartoon Network's eulogy.
Sure they play some good shows here and there, so some might say the channel's still alive... although now it's nothing more than a zombie waiting for a shotgun.

Leelee stated it all, but honestly, why anyone thought live action shows on Cartoon Network was a good idea is beyond me...especially since they were just really poorly made. Luckily they still air Ed, Edd and Eddy sometimes which I watch. They used to air Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (which sucks) but now they don't, which I don't get because they used to show ads for it a lot.
Probably the last good thing they made was the Ed Edd and Eddy movie, which was still quite bad, but at least had some actual effort and was a good way to finish off the series.

Cartoon Network has started showing Looney Tunes after Adult Swim, so 3 am my time, which is pretty f*cking awesome.  The station still generally sucks, but it's awesome to have at least one good cartoon back on the air.  If Adult Swim hadn't taken down Home Movies from its lineup, there would be Home Movies followed by Looney Tunes.  I think my head would have exploded from the awesomeness.

These days I don't watch much Cartoon Network, though with them showing the original Loony Tunes at noon that might change a bit. Whenever I DID watch the channel though was when Adult Swim was on that was also selective.

What happened? Children's taste in television happened. Unintelligent programming is the norm as of late, which is genuinely upsetting, but there are a few decent shows beneath the muck. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (not CN, but applicable), Adventure Time, Regular Show, Young Justice, and a few others are written well, which gives me hope for an intelligent future in cartoons.

Cartoon Network is a bit delayed here in my country... but I like to watch the new Scooby-Doo, all Ben 10 (mostly the "forces" one) and Generator Rex. The only live action 'round here is Unnatural History. I don't watch it...

Adult Swim is gone from here for some years ago... I really miss it.

There is a program that shows old cartoons, like Courage, Johnny Bravo, Dexter, etc., but it shows at 4AM mon-fri and in the morning on weekends! I believe this block is for teenagers/adults that used to watch the old ones. Who the hell wakes up at this time to watch TV?!?

Luckily, we still have Sponge Bob on Nickelondeon

I think it started going downhill when the creator left the show.  I still watch it whenever it's on, but I'm happiest when it's an old one.

One thing I actually like on Cartoon Network, besides Adult Swim, is that they show Pokemon at 4 am here.  I don't know, it's a pretty good thing to have on at 4 in the morning when I'm getting delirious anyway.  I have no clue what's going on, but it's fun to be like "goddammit, Ash, you f*cktard."

it's quite simple to see what happened. all of the good old reruns stopped rerunning, they are trying to take a step forward in entertainment, only to stumble, but that is natural. said stumble is CNreal, but at the same time that stumble is what nickelodeon did before it became 6 hours of spongebob. remember temple of the silver monkey. simply put, cartoon network hasn't gone bad, but it is experimenting, and that is a good thing. now if adult swim didn't hate anime the channel may be worth watching more often.

I think one whole night of anime is plenty of love.  Also, it was called Legend of the Hidden Temple.  The shrine of the silver monkey was a room within the temple.

Ah yes, Legends of the Hidden Temple, how I loved that show, and how I'm sometimes prone to reference said Shrine of Said Silver Monkey in some of my videos x3 Nickelodeon's big screw up was all the unnecessary teenage sitcom crap their cramming down our throats. Crap like Drake and Josh, iCarly, and Victorious with the newest bunch of pop musician inspired mess, Big Time Rush (More like Big Time Mush if you ask me). It's like Nickelodeon is trying to copy The Disney Channel or something.

whats really disturbing is their reasoning for having certain shows on there now,
this is a quote from Sketchor, a rather intelligent individual from the Adult Swim forums.

start of quote
"You act like I've never criticized CN before. You apparently don't know me at all.

Of course they're morons. They cancelled Sym-Bionic Titan, Robotomy, The Secret Saturdays, One Piece, Chowder, Flapjack and countless other good cartoons and they got rid of Naruto because it wasn't making them more money despite it getting great ratings. I understand putting more behind original productions but if you have a strong performing acquisition you don't just get rid of it. Especially when you turn around a pick up garbage like Beyblade.

I don't happen to feel Stuart Synder has only made bad choices for Cartoon Network but he's made plenty of bad ones and anyone can see that. The good things he's accomplished do not outweigh the bad. It might even the scale overall though.

Here's the thing though. There will be a CN after Stuart Snyder and I'd like to believe it would be a great network again once he's no longer in charge. Despite that I'm not going to wish someone loses their job, that's hardly fair. I wish for him to do a better job.

They do dumb stuff but they're still more watchable than Nickelodeon much less Disney Channel and I like several of their current cartoons so I'm going to keep watching them.

But you want to throw the baby out with the bath water. You shouldn't want Cartoon Network to go off the air you should want them to DO A BETTER JOB.

As for them "failing" you have a very different definition of failing than I do but they're failing in the ratings to be sure. They're stuck behind Nickelodeon and Disney Channel and they're never going to beat either of them regularly but they weren't beating them when they had Naruto either."
end of Quote

so apparently, CN (not adult swim) is only keeping shows that give them money from merchandise, now i hated Flapjack, don't get me wrong, but the fact they canceled a show that was getting good ratings cause they couldn't sell MERCHANDISE off it, is a tad disturbing to me.

i mean, you don't see Dr. House action figures and video games.

http://boards.adultswim.com/t5/Show-Suggestions/Which-animes-should-be-put-up-on-Adultswim/td-p/51094465/page/17
where i got the quote

i also replied to him on the same page (KouTheMad is my name there)

Edit: I used the wrong quote, but its lower on that page so it won't be hard for you to find.

I remember a time where I got home everyday from school exited to watch cartoon network and shows like dragon ball Z  Zoids and Gundum. Then I would watch samurai Jack at night. Then when I got older I would watch that show with the guy who had the giant robot from the future without a head which I still love I just can't find it because I don't know the name of it. Basically they just tried to make there own shows and well all the people who used to be able to make cartoons either died or quit and now we have the trash they call cartoon network. Thank God we have Adult Swim.

hahaha high five dude Ed Edd n Eddy is so bomb.. i still have the complete series on my comp and its still good.  I actually feel like Ed Edd n Eddy is the only show that Cartoon Network kept from its golden age.. what happened to things like Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo... that was good shit... not crap today like Chowder and shit... Remember those good old days coming home from elementary/middle school turning on the TV in the afternoon for some Toonami... Dragonballz and all that shit.

You guys want the classics again... suggest you go to Boomerang or whatever its called... thats where your childhood memories are

I think Cartoon Network is actually making a new Looney Tunes show.  While this may seem like a good thing, I actually consider it an abomination.  I wanted them to show more old Looney Tunes, not make new episodes of it.  Without Mel Blanc, it just won't be the same.

I actually kinda like Regular Show but I do agree with you that Cartoon Network needs some serious help, I mean that really bad flash cartoon The Problem Solverz (yeah it's spelled wrong on purpose...-_-;) being green lit for a series is a clear sign. Also, that new Gumball show isn't much better. At least in the Afternoons they show Courage The Cowardly Dog.

How right you are Leelee, how right you are. Especially considering one of those characters looks like a bizarre combination of a human's ass and human excrement. Apparently this cartoon was spawned from an old Newgrounds Flash from way back or something like that... So desperate for new shows now CN is trolling Newgrounds or something?

Maybe they're just so stupid that they don't actually understand the point of Newgrounds, or its target audience. Seriously, I have lost all faith in Cartoon Network.  Aside from the occasional episodes of Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Adult Swim, I feel like my childhood is totally being raped by that stupid network.

I think Cartoon Network is actually making a new Looney Tunes show.  While this may seem like a good thing, I actually consider it an abomination.  I wanted them to show more old Looney Tunes, not make new episodes of it.  Without Mel Blanc, it just won't be the same.

I agree as well because no Mel Blanc= GTFO....but I also just love the use of the word abomination. I should use it more.

I just watched that problem solvers episode and I feel so much dummer than before. But no for real they took that from newgrounds...those damn trolling fags. this makes me feel special though because I got to live in a time when CN was great and didn't suck so bad. At least like leelee said they still show some good shows occasionally the sad part about that is though it's when I'm at school and I can't watch it :(. seriously if they don't get better soon I fear the channel I loved and grew up with might be gone forever.

Now i m not a kid but may be video games consoles divert the interest of guys towards that entertainment. And the trend is really changing as time is passing on. So this could be the reason.

Title: Re: Cartoon Network...What Happend?
Post by: Stark on May 05, 2011, 04:54:32 PM
Children's tastes in entertainment have changed in the last decade or so, this became obvious when the numerous amount of drastic changes happened in the mid 2000s, as seen with Sesame Street. Cookie Monster no longer eats Cookies, no one hardly sees much of Oscar the Grouch and half the episode is focused on that little red thing Elmo, and this is with pre-school shows. Cartoons, as evidenced by Problem Solverz and more recent Spongebob Squarepants episodes don't faire any better. Even Spin off Networks that show older stuff are falling into the Network decay, as evidenced with Nicktoons and their "Comedy Breakfast" which consists of three hours of the same mind numbing, banal, live action teenage drivel you can see on Nickelodeon or another one of Nick's spin off channels. In the case of Cartoon Network, as much as I dislike Problem Solverz, I'd much rather watch that than that pointless CN Real crap they briefly showed/

I agree with that to that show was fairly decent, but if my memory serves me right it was good for the first I think 3 seasons and then it started to decline. overall though to me it was a fairly good show. Plus my dad who will only watch old Mickey Mouse cartoons from back in the 40s and 50s actually like watching that show with me.

Darklord: YES, I miss the old school Cartoon Network as well, at least they are showing Old School Loony Tunes at noon and from 2:30 to 4:30 it's an hour of Ed, Edd n Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog so there IS some hope.

I pretty much watch Adult Swim for mostly Aqua Teen, American Dad, and Family Guy. My only wish is they rerun Harvey Birdman in the Lineup instead of Squidbillies or even Perfect Hair Forever I would die to see that again.

I mean the anime line up is ok but they restarted Kekkaishi so its pretty much FMA:Brotherhood but its only a matter of time before that ends or starts over.

Yeah, Squidbillies is really annoying me, especially since they don't show Home Movies anymore.  I really hope they replace it sometime soon.  I think we're due to get Metalocalypse back in the line-up soon.

Three large mistakes Cartoon Network has made:

1.  Going too far with LOLWUT factor in their shows. Regular Show, Adventure Time, Problem Solverz, Almost Naked Animals, everything seems to be trying to get cheap "What the heck, that couldn't happen in real life" giggles.

2. Messing around too much with good shows. Take "Tom and Jerry". Cat tries to kill mouse. Mouse beats the living crap out of cat. Fun. But lately, they've been working together far too much for my taste. That, and making them talk. As soon as I heard them make noises outside of screaming in pain and/or terror, I died a little inside.

3. Not hiring people with real talent. Seriously, some of these shows look like they were done in Flash.

2. Unless they've actually started making a new Tom and Jerry series that I don't know about because I don't watch TV, none of that has anything to do with CN. The proper T&J show was made DECADES before CN was even a concept.

3. That can be applied to pretty much any network that shows modern cartoons. The vast majority of any of these new 'toons look like some art student scribbled together some awful character sketches and told some amateur animator to make them move around in After Effects.

I agree. Cartoon Network has almost completely died. There are only 2 shows that I can think of that I actually love on the new Cartoon Network. One is Batman: The Brave and the Bold which has the action of Batman: The Animated Series and the campy comedy of the 1960's live action Batman. It's geniunely fun and laugh out loud funny. The other is Young Justice which is actually a fantastic superhero action show featuring the sidekicks and protegees and I find it to be interesting, fun, and action-packed.

Outside those 2, Cartoon Network is just destroying children's minds and convincing them that this crap is comedy.

I still watch cartoons and animation more then "adult" TV.

The cartoons are just plain bad now. It has nothing to do with demographics.

Not like the "grown up" TV is much better. What are the options? News, sports, and reality shows. EQUALLY LAME.

I'd still watch the hell out of Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy if I had Cable and it was on, and I'm 26.

I miss the old-school Cartoon Network, let alone certain good shows like Johnny Bravo, Teen Titans (albeit a DC comics one), Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, and even Samurai Jack. I hardly ever watch CN anymore, which is why I bought plenty of good cartoons on DVD over the years.

If ya ask me, all that live-action crap they've been airing nowadays, sucks BALLS. And don't get me started on the stupid-as-hell "Out of Jimmy's Head" that aired for a short while...
